Let's start with the present . . .

I’m based close to the Idle Valley Wetlands Reserve in North Nottinghamshire. I spend my time writing, publishing, walking, playing the guitar and reaching out to people who reconnect with nature. I act as a Trustee for Jonathan and Angela Scott’s Sacred Nature Initiative. As well as writing, I act as an environment and sustainability advisor, and I’m working on a series of short documentaries highlighting our loss of wildlife and natural spaces.

and work our way back . . .

I moved back to the UK after living for several decades in Kenya where we built our own house in the suburb of Karen of ‘Out of Africa’ fame.

Travel writing

While I worked as a management consultant in East Africa, I continued to travel and write about it for a variety of magazines.

Expedition leader

My first venture as an entrepreneur, taking clients on safari to the Okavango Delta. We used converted army Forward Control LandRovers and enjoyed many great adventures.

The road to Africa

In what I describe as an early-life breakdown, I took off in a LandRover to drive across Africa, reaching Cape Town two years later having visited 40 national parks and game reserves in 17 countries.

Bottle Bank years

My career came to an early peak when we were invited to Buckingham Palace to recycle the royal empties. But Bottle Banks were my thing and I can proudly say they helped transform – for a while – our wasteful society.

Spain1960

My first venture abroad

Aged ten, I set off for Spain with a school friend. I’ve hardly stopped traveling since.
